OnlyLook: Village Tart Desserts
Maryse Chevrière — March 16, 2010

Valrhona Chocolate Dulce de Leche Skillet Torte.
The desserts at Village Tart inspired some high hopes. Afterall, the newish bakery-brasserie sports a pedigree that includes Permanent Bruncher Lesly Bernard and consulting pastry chef Pichet Ong. The dessert menu seduces with words like “Valrhona chocolate,” “butterscotch,” and “dulce de leche.” And early word on their baked goods set inspired more confidence. Sadly, the love affair ends there.
OnlyLook: Mother Burger
Arthur Bovino — September 30, 2009

Mother Burger’s Bacon Cheeseburger w/Applegate Farms’ Organic Sunday Bacon $8.50.
You know you should be suspicious when servers at a restaurant with ‘burger’ in the name suggest everything except the burger. That happened at Mother Burger (view site) in the plaza behind One Worldwide Plaza in Midtown when we were recently invited for dinner.
The large, open courtyard should be an ideal setting for drawing office coworkers when the whistle blows. Blockheads Burritos co-owners (and brothers), Don and Ken Sofer, must have had a similar thought when they recently signed their 10-year lease. With outdoor seating, $2.00 beer specials, blue skies, recession-friendly prices and hormone-free and organic meats, there’s reason to be hopeful, albeit skeptical when sitting down to the free peanuts.

The “Big O’ Burger,” described as a “secret blend crusted with sweet shallot,” $12.00.
For a restaurant to be significant, for it to be “approved” and included in AlwaysHungryNY.com’s quality-controlled, Very Advanced Search Engine, it must first be thoroughly investigated. Lucy Browne’s (view site) came onto our radar when our friend, Josh Ozersky (aka The Feedbag), got involved in the transformation of the former Steak Frites space into a comfort food eatery with the creation of his signature “Big O’ Burger.”

Thanksgiving on a Roll, $13.50.
We’ll get to the burger in a moment. Let’s start by saying, that if we had only tasted the Thanksgiving on a Roll, our experience may have amounted to a FirstLook, a glimpse into a new AHNY-approved eatery. The soft Balthazar roll housed a well-proportioned mix of holiday staples: stuffing, gravy, juicy slabs of turkey, and an authoritative cranberry sauce speckled with fruity gems. The accompanying mountain of French fries were commendable as well, impressively crisp. Their presence was the only thing that ultimately saved our unsatisfied palates as we waded through the other dishes.
