AlwaysInformed: Food Art at the New Museum

Top, Cumpadre: Fishing Line, Croissant, Butterfly. Bottom, food installations in Fischer’s exhibit.

We did it! We made a croissant float in midair!

Just kidding. Urs Fischer did. The installation is part the Swiss artist’s exhibit, Urs Fischer: Marguerite de Ponty, currently up at the New Museum (site) through February 7th, 2010. Don’t be fooled, this isn’t a specifically food-centric show (ask the front desk where the food art is and you’ll be met with an eye roll and directions to the croissant on the third floor).

The piece is cool, in an irreverent modern arty kind of way, if not just plain amusing at the very least. But the real attraction for food folks is on the second floor, where Fischer has filled the space with different shaped mirrored cubes covered in a variety of silkscreened images—including food items like an éclair, a raw steak, Swiss cheese, and a rotting pear, among other things.

It’s an ideal weekend afternoon activity, and if you’re in the mood for a bite afterwards, here are AlwaysHungryNY.com’s recommended restaurants in the area.

AlwaysInformed: Food Art “From the Vine”

‘Rotondi e Rossi,’ Oil on Canvas, 24×30 inches

We’re always on the lookout for new cool food art, so our interest has recently been piqued by Justin Horowitz’s “From the Vine” series, seven oil on canvas paintings of vine-ripened, Italian tomatoes. The series will be on display 24 hours/day through September at the Gourmet Garage in SoHo on 453 Broome Street) in the street-level windows on Mercer Street. The paintings are being sold through the Woodward Gallery.

AlwaysInformed: Veselkhiarascuro

Charnick installing Veselkhiarascuro at the AlwaysHungryNY.com headquarters

Those of you who are fans of Veselka (restaurant page) may remember reading on Eater last August and Grub Street in January that Veselkhiarascuro, the iconic mural by Arnie Charnick, was going on sale. The restaurant’s planned 10-foot expansion through the back wall meant it would no longer fit. All you 24-hour pierogie-eaters need not fear however because the mural has found a wonderful home right here in AlwaysHungryNY.com’s headquarters.

It’s not everyday that an artist walks into your office carrying an epic piece of artwork that when unfurled spans almost twenty feet. When I asked AlwaysHungryNY.com’s founder, Jeff Zalaznick how we had acquired Veselka’s mural he explained:

“When I walked into Veselka and saw that the originally high price of the mural had been lowered and now included the chance to ‘make your best offer,’ I made Charnick an offer he couldn’t refuse.”

And what was that offer?
