AlwaysInformed: World Series of Food

Garlic Fries at Yankee Stadium ($5/small).

Yankees vs. Phillies. Call it the Amtrak Series, the I-95 Series, the Liberty Series or Cheesecake versus Cheesesteak. As long as the Yanks are back in the Fall Classic, you can call it what you like.

Even haters must admit, it’s cool that Yankee Stadium is hosting the series in its inaugural season. While Shake Shack and the Acela Club have garnered CitiField more praise for its food (we mourn the loss of the pastrami dog), you could argue the Bronx has a better signature dish: Lobel’s Steak Sandwich.

NYY Steak’s Long Bone Ribeye (24 oz., $47.75) and Lobel’s Steak Sandwich ($15).

If you’re going to a World Series game at Yankee Stadium and you want to splash out on food, read our review of the Yankees’ steakhouse, NYY Steak. If buying World Series tickets means you can barely afford a Premio Italian sausage, prepare for the food court with a food tour of the stadium punctuated by John Sterling’s radio calls— there’s even a culinary batting order. Regarding that Cheesecake vs. Cheesesteak thing, fans should avoid both at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees Cheescake on a Stick at the Mohegan Sun Sports Bar isn’t worth the $9 price, and the cheesesteaks are skimpy on their dry meat and cheese. If you’re looking for good cheesecake in New York, these recommendations should take care of you. As for cheesesteaks, well, we’re big enough to cede those to Tony Luke’s and Jim’s.

Left, Philly soft pretzel from Philly Pretzel Factory ($3.00/10). Right, the White House Special ($13.90).

If you’re interested in some New York vs. Philly food debates, read our burger square-off SquareBurger vs. ShackBurger or find out which city’s soft pretzels reign. If you’re driving down to Philadelphia for a game at Citizen’s Bank Park, these gorgeous pictures may convince you to make a detour to Atlantic City for a White House Special at the White House Sub Shop. Here’s a preview of the concessions at the bandbox in the sixth borough for when you arrive. On a side note, what exactly about “Whose Your Daddy?” does Pedro think demonstrates fear?

Other AlwaysHungryNY.com Philadelphia and outlying dining recommendations include:

-A write-up of Georges Perrier’s famed five-star eatery, Le Bec-Fin,
-A review of Michael Solomonov’s Israeli-based cuisine at Zahav.
-A pie-by-pie at Osteria.
-A look at Charlie’s Hamburgers in Folsom.
-Pictures of meals at Barclay Prime and Tinto
-A local cheesesteak pick: Dalessandro’s Steaks

Hopefully, the series will end with one last Sterling Shake.
